The Department of Biology has 22 staff and offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, based on its research strengths in Molecular Microbiology, Ecology, Immunology, Bioinformatics, Genetics and Cell Biology in a vibrant learning environment.

The Role

We are seeking a full-time research assistant for 22 months in the Department of Biology at Maynooth University. The department and research group offer excellent research conditions with state-of-the-art infrastructure in a highly dynamic and collegial environment. The project is collaborative in nature working together with researchers from different EU countries. Our laboratory investigates antibiotic resistance in environmental and animal microbiomes. We investigate the bacteria and mechanisms of resistance. This position will involve the characterisation of the freshwater microbiomes in temperate/cold climates aquaculture and warm water aquaculture as well as identifications and quantification of antibiotic resistance genes present in these environments.

Principal Duties

Key responsibilities include:

• Performing experimental procedures including DNA extraction, array qPCR, droplet-digital PCR, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, sample collection and analyzing results using statistics;
• Participating to the diverse tasks associated with the daily functioning of the laboratory;
• Discussing papers during the weekly journal clubs that are held in the laboratory;
• Presenting data in the laboratory group meetings and Water JPI consortia meetings.

The ideal candidate will have:

Essential

• We are looking for a highly motivated person with experience in molecular biology and microbiology but training in specific techniques used in the lab will be provided.
• The candidate will be expected to have a BSc in a relevant discipline.

Desirable

• Experience in the area of antibiotic resistance or microbiome research is desirable.
