Title of Project: Surveillance of Verocytotoxigenic E. Coli in Ireland: A One Health Approach (VTEC)
Location: Teagasc Food Research Centre, Ashtown, Dublin 15.
Basic Function: The successful candidate will join a research team conducting a National baseline study on verocytotoxigenic E. coli on bovine carcasses and beef meat at slaughter plants.
Background: This post wil be carried out jointly between the Food Safety Department at Teagasc Food Research Centre, Ashtown, Dublin 15 and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Laboratories at Backweston, Celbridge where the candiate will be primarily based. The post will be carried out as part of a national research project on verocytotoxgenic E.coli (VTEC) in Ireland. Beef trade is an important element of Irish economy, however there is not enough information to estimate the national prevalence for VTEC in beef in Ireland, which is a key piece of information to demonstrate our commitment to food safety to our trading partners and to support market access. This part of the project will involve a comprehensive survey of carcasses and meat from Irish beef slaughtering plants to target selected major VTEC serovars (eight) related to human illness and enable calculation of a national prevalence.
