Australia’s food system has grown and evolved over hundreds of years. It is a system that’s served Australians well and underpinned much of our economic prosperity. But it’s a system at risk. And nowhere is the threat larger or more real than in the domain of food fraud. Unfortunately, for many, it seems to be a lower-order issue.

Further developments to Northern Ireland’s unique quality control system for the animal feed industry were unveiled at a meeting in Armagh this week. The Food Fortress network is made up of feed producers and importers contributing to a programme of sampling and testing to protect the food chain from contamination and currently covers close to 5 million tonnes of compound feed production.

China has decided to apply stricter rules on pesticide production and imports to improve food safety and environment protection in the world's most populous country. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang signed a State Council decree on Saturday to promulgate a revised regulation on pesticide management, as the authority views the move as vitally important to improving food safety and the environment.

The deputy chief food safety officer for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says collaboration is key to combating food fraud as science is no longer sufficient to stop the problem. Dimitri made the comments during a panel discussion at a two-day conference in Quebec City on global prevention and mitigation of food fraud.

The EU is introducing new rules to cut down on ‘food fraud’ and prevent a repeat of the horsemeat scandal, which was first uncovered by Irish authorities four years ago. However there are concerns the regulations don’t go far enough, and that a scheme similar to the Republic’s country-of-origin labelling system should be rolled out across Europe.

More than half of us bought a "free from" product during the last three months, according to Kantar Worldpanel. Younger people are leading a trend towards buying products without dairy and gluten in particular. He said that while only about 5% of the population needed to avoid certain food groups for medical reasons, 54% of households joined the trend in the first three months of this year by buying at least one product from the category.

Co. Armagh based meat supplier, Eurostock Foods, which has recently been rebranded as Bawnbua Foods, has today announced new contract wins worth in excess of €11.75m. Over the last three years, Bawnbua Foods has invested €2.35m in its business and plans to invest a further €1.18m throughout 2017 to support its ongoing development. The new contracts span a variety of customers including international supermarket chains, food manufacturing companies and specialist frozen food retailers.
