The FSA is inviting researchers to tender for a project exploring how food safety is considered during the procurement of food in the UK public sector, for example in schools and care providers.

The public inquiry into the 2005 E.coli O157 outbreak in South Wales found that significant failures in the way food was procured for schools was a key contributor to the outbreak. Also, the Agency’s Listeria Risk Management Programme has identified procurement of food for those in a care setting as a key area for tackling the incidence of listeria-related foodborne disease.

One of the main aims of the research is to identify examples of good practice that could be used to develop a framework to ensure food safety in public sector food procurement. The framework will help prevent future outbreaks of foodborne disease and reduce levels of listeriosis in vulnerable people in care settings.

To find out more about the research call, you will need to register as a supplier on the FSA’s electronic tendering system, ePPS, via the link below. Applications should be submitted by Thursday 15 December 2011.
