The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) served a record 12 enforcement orders on food businesses across the State in October.
In addition to 11 closure orders issued to food businesses for breaches in food safety legislation the authority also issued one improvement order last month.
“October has seen a record number of enforcement orders served on food businesses to date this year,” the chief executive of the FSAI Prof Alan Reilly, said.
He said 12 orders in a single month was “unacceptable” and stressed that consumers had to “be confident that the food they are eating is safe to eat”
Prof Alan Reilly said the FSAI and enforcement officers would continue to use a “zero tolerance policy” in relation to breaches of food safety legislation. “Food businesses should take full advantage of the information and support made available by the FSAI and its official agencies to ensure a basic and consistent food safety management plan is developed and put in place in line with legislation.”
Details of the food businesses served with the enforcement orders are published on the FSAI’s website at www.fsai.ie.
