Microbiological surveys have demonstrated the presence of faecal organisms on anything from bank notes to ice cubes and wristbands, while surveys of hand washing frequency have shown how often this simple measure is ignored.   Why can’t we sustain the impact beyond Global Handwashing Day (15 October) or the regular Government campaigns? Can new behavioural approaches make more people wash their hands? This timely conference will examine whether some sectors of society are disadvantaged by poor provision of hand washing facilities and address ways of promoting both these and good hand washing practice. It will also look at ways to measure the health and economic consequences of the failure to wash hands.   The conference provides an excellent opportunity for those working in the hand hygiene and hygiene design industries, healthcare, food, education and public health to catch up on research and current thinking on hand washing, with experts from the health protection, food safety, behavioural and economical fields.
