W5 is delighted to announce that Sir Mark Walport, the Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser, is embarking on a programme of public engagement on climate science and its implications.

Warming of the climate system is unequivocal and poses one of the biggest challenges of our time. Rigorous scientific evidence shows very clearly that human emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are warming the Earth’s atmosphere and causing climate disruption.

This simple statement raises other questions: How much more will the planet warm if we continue emitting greenhouse gases? What impact will this warming have? What are the options for reducing emissions?

During this talk, Sir Mark will be highlighting three major challenges:

  • Mitigation (reducing the pace and magnitude of greenhouse-gas induced climate change)
  • Adaptation (reducing the vulnerability of society to the degree of change that will occur)
  • Suffering (responding to human suffering resulting from climate change)

The Planet in Our Hands: Responding to Climate Change will set out the most comprehensive evidence to date on the human influence on climate change.

It will examine the potential impacts of that change, options for response, the role of Government, science and technology, the importance of global leadership and individual behaviour.

Tea and Coffee will be served on arrival from 6.30pm with the talk commencing at 7pm followed by a Q&A session.
