This FREE 60 minute webinar will discuss the role that animal nutrition can play in improving consumer health. Focussing on Omega 3 fatty acids, it will demonstrate how agriculture, food processors, retailers & public health bodies can work together to improve the health status of our nation.

Two speakers will present information in this webinar. Dr Heather Hayes will discuss Omega 3 intakes and the development of alternative food solutions. Professor Alice Stanton will present the findings from a human clinical study using Omega enriched foods and consider their relevance to global health.

This webinar aims to demonstrate the philosophy of One Health - from Soil to Society. This philosophy views that activities at each stage of the food production chain can have a significant impact on quality of produce from subsequent stages especially in relation to nutrient flow. By implementing improved nutritional regimes for livestock, we can improve the nutrient content of food to a level which is meaningful in terms of better human health. The webinar will present information around the development of an animal feed ingredient designed to enhance the level of Omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) in primary agricultural produce, and show how this development has been scientifically proven to improve the health of the consumer. Information will be presented on the different types of Omega 3 fatty acids in our diet and their relative importance to human health. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommend that we consume at least 250 mg of EPA and DHA per day for good health but statistics clearly demonstrate that the majority of the world’s population - particularly children do not eat enough Omega 3. Reasons for this shortfall in intake will be discussed and an alternative food solution developed by Devenish Nutrition will be presented. Devenish Nutrition, an agri-food technology company has developed OmegaPro, a feed ingredient which can be incorporated into diets of animals to produce high quality meat & eggs with an increased content of long chain fatty acids. Development of these food products will be discussed and consideration will be given as to how they comply with EC Nutritional & Health claim regulations.

The webinar further aims to clearly demonstrate the link between improved animal nutrition, product quality & consumer health by presenting findings from a double blind randomised study conducted at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). This study demonstrated that regular consumption of omega enriched chicken & eggs dramatically improved the Omega 3 status of consumers & moved them from high risk of cardiovascular disease to medium/ low risk.

The success of OmegaPro derived food products will be determined by our ability to communicate the health benefits to audiences at multiple levels. Food products developed from OmegaPro are affordable, enjoyable & have a positive health impact on all ages. Health benefits must be immediately apparent to consumers, displayed on pack in an easily understood & clear fashion. At a different level, the science behind the development must be made available to more engaged consumers & also to health professionals. Devenish is committed to producing food products of superior nutritional quality which can positively influence policy makers in both agriculture & health.
