This FREE 60 minute webinar will describe a safefood funded research project conducted by Dr Bob Madden at the Agri-food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) in which twenty-four food business operators in Northern Ireland participated in a study where ready-to-foods were  analysed for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes from July 2015 until November 2016.

All Listeria monocytogenes isolates obtained were subjected to whole genome sequencing and the data obtained was analysed to inform on the relatedness and potential pathogenicity of the isolates. In addition the physical properties of 130 foodstuffs were determined, and the ability of the foods to support the growth of Listeria monocytogenes at normal refrigeration temperature, and abuse temperatures, was estimated.

Finally, the carriage of genes enabling isolates to tolerate sanitizer used in the food industry was investigated.
