The Food Standards Agency (FSA) would like to invite you to take part in a summit on the implications of challenges to the food system for consumers.

According to The Foresight Report on food and farming: ‘The global food system will experience an unprecedented confluence of pressures over the next 40 years’, and stated ‘this is a unique time in history – decisions made now and over the next few decades will disproportionately influence the future’.

The Food Standards Agency was established in 2001 to ‘protect the interests of consumers in relation to food’ and to make sure that consumers have a strong voice and representation in the food system.

We know that the food system is complex and interconnected and that consumers’ interests are broad. At the heart of open policy making is the recognition that we should invite broader inputs and expertise and create space for others to help identify and solve problems. We hope to adopt this approach as we start to fulfil the commitment in the FSA strategy 2015-2020, to work with others to create the best food future that we can deliver.

Our Food Future will bring together and build on existing work. It will develop our shared understanding of what the impact of medium-term changes to the global food system could have on the UK consumer.

We will launch a new report, looking at consumer views on the food system, and seek to hear perspectives from across interests and disciplines. The day will include a range of key note speakers – covering different aspects of the food system – followed by workshops to scope and agree potential ways forward.
