Ever wondered how effective biocides (disinfectants, antiseptics and sterilants) are at controlling microbial contamination in food processing plants?

To what extent have food-borne pathogens built up resistance to biocides and antibiotics?

Are commonly used food processing stresses effective against food-borne pathogens?

These are some of the questions that will be openly discussed at an up-coming workshop which would be of interest to the Irish food industry, regulators, environmental health officers, veterinarians, public health professionals and researchers.

The name of the workshop is Microbial challenges in the food chain - The impact of food processing stresses, antibiotic and biocide resistance and will take place at Teagasc Food Research Centre Ashtown on Thursday 10th November and will include a keynote presentation from Dr Bernhard Meyer, Microbiological Support Manager for Ecolab Europe.

The workshop will create awareness about antibiotic and biocide resistance in the food chain, highlight how it happens, how widespread it is and how it can be prevented.  It will also discuss how effective food processing stresses are at controlling pathogens.
