Conference Overview

Biotechnology in general and GMO/Modern biotechnology in particular is considered a key technology of the 21st century. GMO technology is an enabling technology that is used in a variety of industry sectors such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, animal health, textiles, chemicals, plastic, paper, fuel, food and feed processing.   The EU has adopted GMO technology as an integral part of the EU economy. It is a key driver in the EU Lisbon Strategy for job creation and sustainable development. GMO technology is classified as:

  • Red biotechnology: the use of GMOs for the production of medicinal products;
  • White biotechnology: the use GMOs to make biobased products for industrial use;
  • Green biotechnology: the use of GM crops in agriculture.

We encourage all those engaged in biotechnology to attend in order to develop a shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities in this area for Ireland and Europe.
