Healthcare services are facing challenges across the developed world and are being forced to do more with less resources. Chronic conditions as a result of the ageing population and lifestyle factors are placing a huge burden on the system. In Ireland, due to pressures on government expenditure, in excess of €2 billion will have to be taken out of the healthcare budget for the period 2011-2014. The number of health service staff has been reduced from a peak of 111,000 in 2007 to less than 102,000 now and this number will be further reduced by 2014. The next two years will be a time of great change for the health service given the scope of the reform needed, combined with current economic circumstances.
