The Department of the Environment’s soon to be published waste management strategy “Delivering Resource Efficiency” sets the strategic direction for waste policy in Northern Ireland. Within this context, the Department is consulting on proposals to introduce restrictions on the landfilling of food waste. These proposals are an important component in fulfilling the broader aim of the strategy, to significantly reduce waste sent to landfill and drive the management of waste up the waste hierarchy, towards waste prevention, re-use and recycling.

The consultation contains proposed regulatory measures to:

  • require food waste producers to present food waste for separate collection;
  • introduce an obligation on district councils to provide receptacles for the separate collection of food waste from households;
  • introduce a ban on mixing separately collected food waste;
  • introduce a ban on the landfilling of separately collected food waste;
  • introduce a ban on the non-domestic discharge of food waste into the public sewer network.

The purpose of the seminar is to engage with stakeholders, inform them of the proposals and discuss the implications for the various sectors. The seminar will be of particular interest to businesses involved in food production, food retail or food preparation, local authorities, waste management companies, waste carriers and landfill operators. It will include a series of presentations followed by an OPEN PANEL Discussion on the various issues arising. Don’t miss the opportunity to have your say.
