Antibiotics such as tetracyclines, quinolones, macrolides, sulphonamides and penicillins are frequently used in animal husbandry for the treatment and prevention of diseases. To avoid undesired residues of these substances in food, maximum residue limits (MRLs) have been established within the EU. Food produced or imported in the EU has to fulfill these residue requirements. Self-monitoring by the food industry, farmers and retailers is an important tool to ensure the consumer safety with regard to antibiotic residues. Nevertheless compliance with this self–monitoring program has to be safeguarded by the competent authorities.

In close collaboration RIKILT – Institute of Food Safety and Wageningen Business School organize a two day workshop which covers all relevant aspects of antibiotic analysis, e.g. use of antibiotics, legislation, control programs and method of analysis. Directly after the workshop two additional in-depth training courses will be organized for a limited number of participants. The first training will focus on the production and daily use of the Scan Test (based on microbiological screening) for antibiotics. The second training deals with the confirmation analysis using LC-MS-MS.

Workshop objectives

The two-day workshop will focus on screening methods for registered antibiotics as well as confirmatory methods using LC-MS/MS. Time will be dedicated to EU regulations and strategies for screening, identification, confirmation and quantification of analytes. Next to the theoretical aspect, practical sessions are included and there is time for guided tours and discussions.

After the workshop you:

  • will be informed on the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry and their negative effects;
  • will have better insight in assessment of effective strategies for screening and confirmation of antibiotic residues;
  • will have gained technical knowledge to implement screening and confirmatory methods for the analysis of antibiotics in your own laboratory;
  • will have gained knowledge about quality assurance of analytical methods.

Target audience

The workshop and in-depth trainings are intended for professionals with a technical background in industry, in governmental or academic positions in the area of food and feed safety. For instance you can be a quality control officer or working as a manager or analyst in a laboratory.
