The war on emerging pathogens isn’t like any others. The war on drugs might well end with a new approach. The war on terrorism might eventually wind down. But the war on emerging pathogens is different. It will never end.

This conclusion is showing up fairly often in the scientific literature this year, from authors Ying Wu and George F. Gao, writing in Nature, to David M. Morens and Anthony S. Fauci writing in the PLOS Collections. All end with the same conclusion.

The President of Ireland Young Researcher Award (PIYRA) is Science Foundation Ireland's most prestigious award to recruit and retain early career researchers to carry out their research in Ireland. This programme emphasises the importance that Science Foundation Ireland places on the early development of academic careers. The award recognises outstanding engineers and scientists who, early in their careers, have already demonstrated or shown exceptional potential for leadership at the frontiers of knowledge. Awardees will be selected on the basis of exceptional accomplishments in science and engineering in all areas covered by SFI’s legal remit and on the basis of creative research plans that are built on work that has attracted international attention. For the PIYRA programme, scientific excellence is both necessary and paramount but is not sufficient; applications must also demonstrate potential impact.

The European Food Safety Authority recently published the findings from a European Union (EU) survey on the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in certain ready-to-eat foods, i.e. fish (hot smoked, cold smoked or gravad fish), packaged heat-treated meat products and soft and semi-soft cheeses. Overall, the proportion of samples exceeding the legislative limit for Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat foods was low. However, considering the popularity of these foods and the severe implications that infection with Listeria monocytogenes can have on health, vigilance is required by everyone in the food chain.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released its Surveillance for Foodborne Disease Outbreaks in the United States from 1998 to 2008. This data describes the number of illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths from contaminated food and water.

During that time frame, there were 13,405 foodborne disease outbreaks, which resulted in 273,120 cases of illness, 9,109 hospitalizations and 200 deaths. Note that these numbers are much smaller than the 48 million illnesses estimated every year; that’s because most foodborne illnesses are not reported to public health officials.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is requesting comments, scientific data and other information to use in an assessment of the risk of human salmonellosis associated with the consumption of tree nuts.

The planned risk assessment seeks to quantify the public health risk associated with eating tree nuts potentially contaminated with Salmonella, the bacterium that causes salmonellosis, and to evaluate the impact of interventions to prevent contamination with this bacterium or to reduce its contamination levels.

The need for a risk assessment is underscored by outbreaks of human salmonellosis linked to tree nuts over the past decade, by product recalls, and by Salmonella isolation from tree nuts during surveys. In recent years, contamination with Salmonella has been found in almonds, cashews, pistachios, pine nuts, Brazil nuts, macadamia nuts and walnuts, among other types of tree nuts destined for human consumption.

The risk assessment will inform FDA policy and may be useful for owners and operators of tree nut processing plants and other post-harvest facilities, among other stakeholders.

The FDA will present a webinar on the assessment plan and related data needs on Monday, July 22, from noon to 1 p.m. To participate, visit https://collaboration.fda.gov/treenutsrisk, select “guest” and enter either your name or “guest”.

Following the Webinar, a recording of the session will be posted on the FDA’s risk and safety assessment web page. Additionally, to submit comments, scientific data and other information for use in the risk assessment, visit the same risk and safety assessment web page, where a link to the Federal Register notice is posted.
