Antibiotic use in animals is expected to surge by two thirds globally between 2010 and 2030, while doubling in emerging giants like China, Brazil, India and Russia, according to a Princeton University study. It warned that the practice is pushing us closer to a time when common infections could become a death sentence because they will no longer respond to drugs.

Teagasc is seeking to recruit a Technologist with a proven track record in Food/Dairy science with experience in processing of dairy ingredients and formulations in which they are incorporated. Under the guidance of the Project Leader and in conjunction with the post-doctoral scientists involved in the project, the appointed technologist will be responsible for the organization and control of a variety of process unit-operations (thermal, separations and dehydration) at pilot scale.
The appointee will be involved in experimental / process design and will be required to carry out analytical methodologies (HPLC, particle size, microstructure and rheological analysis) to support development/processing of dairy based (milk, skim, whey) concentrates, ingredients and formulations (including fortified milk powders and infant formula powders). The successful candidate will work strategically with Teagasc and University scientists as part of a state funded initiative in dairy processing in collaboration with industry.
According to an estimate from the CDC, produce causes nearly half of all food-borne illnesses, while dairy and eggs cause 20 percent, meat and poultry are the culprits in only 22 percent of cases, and fish and shellfish just 6 percent.
A new CDC report from the Interagency Food Safety Analytics Collaboration looked at data on US outbreaks between 2008 and 2012. In order to really home in on what contributes to food poisoning, the researchers looked at outbreaks that were caused by one of four of the most common pathogens — E. coli, Campylobacter, salmonella, and listeria — and that could be attributed to a single food category.

McDonald’s Europe announced the plan to end use of antibiotics classified by the World Health Organisation as “highest priority critically important”. It said it would phase out the use of fluoroquinolones and marcolides over the next three years.
Food safety critics say announcement would pressure rivals to make similar changes - but pointed out that McDonald’s had yet to fulfil similar 2003 pledge.
