The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (SZPI) focused on the quality of olive oils on the domestic market.

Overall, 67 percent of evaluated samples failed to meet the requirements of European legislation. The most severe findings were olive oils that did not correspond to the extra virgin label when assessed and were of lower quality. Two samples matched the category lampante oil, which is not meant for retail sale and is intended for further processing.

Currently there is not an internationally recognised official definition of food fraud. A generally accepted concept is that food fraud occurs when a perpetrator deliberately passes off a foodstuff that does not meet either implicit or explicit claims. It therefore covers a huge variety of acts including, but not limited to, undeclared addition of water, exceeding fishing quotas, redirection of stolen products and substitution of key ingredients. When using an analytical approach to verify the authenticity of a product, it is important to identify a strategy, which enables differentiation between fraudulent and authentic samples.

Defra; Development, optimisation and validation of a non-targeted proteomics method for meat species identificationhttps://safefoodkn.ning.com/profiles/blogs/defra-development-optimisation-and-validation-of-a-non-targeted-p2020-08-18T14:17:55.000Z2020-08-18T14:17:55.000Zsafefoodhttps://safefoodkn.ning.com/members/safefood

Description

This project aimed to develop and validate a multi-species proteomics screening tool for meat species verification in processed meat products. Incidents of food and drink mislabelling and fraud can damage public trust in the integrity of the food chain and impact on the competitiveness and resilience of UK businesses. The development of robust analytical tools to help verify product labelling and support food law enforcement is fundamental to improving confidence in food labelling for consumers, businesses and the food industry.

413 fraud reports in the beef supply chain were identified between 1997 and 2017.

Counterfeiting accounted for 42.9% of identified fraud.

Primary processing is the most vulnerable area, accounting for 35.8% of reports.

The Horsemeat Scandal of 2013 highlighted vulnerabilities within the European beef supply chain. The report resulted in mass product recalls across Europe, a downturn in beef sales, and subsequent economic losses for genuine actors in the supply chain. The aim of this review was to improve understanding of beef supply chain vulnerability via the use of trend analysis, to enable the formulation of strategies that may help in the prevention and detection of fraud in beef products, and facilitate greater protection for consumers and industry in the future.
