Evans</p>
<p>While chemotherapy is a gruelling form of treatment in itself, the reduced immune system function that it causes can leave patients at risk from pathogens too. These illnesses can be contracted from a range of sources, including food.</p>

<p><span>A Postdoctoral Researcher position is available, funded by the Irish Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, as part of a 4-year research project on development of sensor-based microbial safety testing systems for the Irish meat industry. The project is a collaboration between the University College Cork, Teagasc Food Research Centre (Ashtown, Dublin), one Irish meat company and one technology company.</span></p>

<p>In Ireland, 3% of raw minced beef is known to be contaminated with a particular harmful type of <em>E. coli</em> (called "Shiga toxin-producing <em>E. coli</em>" or "STEC") that can cause kidney failure.</p>
<p>Children under five years of age and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to this type of <em>E. coli</em>.</p>
